You will probably be given most things you need if you let people know you want their second hand items, and if you wait until after you have a baby shower to buy anything else you might need. Keep in mind that while babies do need a lot of items, they don’t need many toys at first and they grow out of newborn clothes very quickly, so try not to stock up on those items too much.

Furniture

  • Cot & mattress
  • Bassinet & mattress (they only stay in a bassinet for a few months, so get a cot before the baby comes, you don’t want to be shopping with a newborn)
  • Change table (or draws at a good height) & change matt (with lipped edges)
  • Draws/wardrobe to put clothes in
  • Nappy bin
  • Chair for feeding (you can just use your lounge chair if it isn’t too far from the nursery)
